How far has the pageant industry come in Nigeria?
A beauty pageant or beauty contest is a competition that has traditionally focused on judging and ranking the physical attributes of the contestants, although some contests have evolved to also incorporate personality traits, intelligence, talent, and answers to judges’ questions as judged criteria. Pageantry in Nigeria can not be mentioned without National newspaper Daily Times who started a photo contest in 1957. Contestants posted photographs of themselves to the Daily Times headquarters in Lagos where finalists were shortlisted. Ever since, the entertainment sub-sector in the Country has witnessed the increasing introduction of beauty pageants in various forms and shades. The experience has exposed many young women to being CONFIDENCE: as the biggest takeaway to keep in mind, however, is none of it matters if you don’t believe in yourself. Being in a pageant teaches you to be confident and love yourself; you have to be confident and love yourself regardless of the way that others see you. FRIENDSHIP:The other contestants you are around during your journey will most likely become lifelong friends if everyone has the same intention. Some people strictly have the “eyes on the prize” mindset, but overall you have to think about how amazing and diverse the amount of personality you have combined in one room. COMMUNICATION:Two of the most important aspects of doing a pageant is the on-stage question and the interview. These both help with communication skills. They help you learn to speak elegantly, knowing to think before speaking and looking at multiple sides of situations.NETWORKING AND OPPORTUNITIES:While participating in pageants you will make lifelong friends, and even after. You will make connections with certain people that will help your life in the nearest future.
Some Beauty Contests or Pageants in Nigeria is becoming a thing of rendezvous or child’s play. Today, giving back to society have become a copy and past syndrome where the queens instead of being creative and innovative go about copying projects that were done by another queen. One annoying thing about the matter is the issue of using IDP or Motherless home as a project. Sponsors and supporters now losses interest in assisting when a proposal is forwarded to them because all they read or hear is visits to motherless homes, releasing of new photographs or Queen launches a new car after given out hug amount. Some of the queens don’t even have direction at all. They only believe in personal and secret courtesy visit with out notifying their Manager or Organization or attending events.to show up, forgetting their responsibilities.
Regardless of the photocopying ones, we still have some prestigious Queens who have good records and are doing still doing extremely good. Their projects are to international standard, innovative and live touching. Some are making their impact felt as aspiring beauty Queens tend to dream bigger than what they saw if they become future queens. This is because they have seen that a crown is only as relevant as a beauty queen make it. If she win the crown but fail to perform any community service, make any appearances, or mentor other girls, her crown becomes irrelevant. However, if she make the commitment to give back to others and her community using her title as a platform for her service, she become a relevant figure in society.. Pageant queens have the responsibility to use their titles to give back to our communities and to be role models to others. It’s up to them to make the crowns relevant in society.
