What Good Show Have You Watched Lately: Drag Race Philippines Season 3

Previously, on Drag Race Philippines Season 3

It’s the Girl Group Challenge. This is probably one of the most anticipated challenges since this is where drag queens who can’t do fashion (Design Challenge) and impersonation (Snatch Game) but can pull off that deadly combination of sing and dance and can demolish, devour, eat and leave no crumbs would really shine.

Of course, fashion queen Vers** and the nonchalant queen Yudip*** can’t relate, but this is one of the show’s baptisms of fire so they either have to (wo)man up, or they can just wait for Mama Pao to let them have it. It gives meaning to let them sashay away, which is the Drag Race Cinematic Universe version of an Elimination Match.

Drag Race Philippines is nothing short of entertaintment. And season 2, dare I say, is the best season yet.

For the uninitiated, DRPH is where the art of drag is fleshed out through the most difficult challenges to ever exist in television. Difficult, at least to the casual viewers. What does a drag queen do, you may ask?

Well, to tell you in absolute honesty: ALL OF IT.

To qualify for DRPH, or if you think you are cut out for a chance to become a global glamazon, it is of paramount importance to know how to paint yourself flawlessly. You also need to have at least a little knowledge on sewing (spoiler alert, in episode 2, the forever fascinating Angel Galang went straight to the bottom because she couldn’t sew).

Hopefuls should also need to have a heightened sense of fashion (or at least one of your team members), since you are going to the runway to showcase your outfits that should not veer away from themes assigned to you beforehand.

Mastering a couple of songs for the cannon Lip Synch for Your Life are also important, all while making sure that your antics, gyrations, voguing, twerking and what-have-you’s would still embody the essence of the song (see Roxxxy Andrews No One Gets the Price).

As if what mentioned above is not enough, the show ups the ante by throwing challenges that need to be slayed hard. The goal is to shantay – you stay – all the way to the finalé.

This is why drag is an art form that should be regarded in the same degree of respect with other forms of art.

Back to the Girl Group Challenge of the most recent episode of the latest season. The winner of the Mini Challenge, Khianna, had the advantage of choosing her Girl Groupmates while those who were not chosen must prove to the world that they are worthy of being selected. But such is the appeal of the show. It’s a competition after all.

But Season 1 Girl Group Challenge Pop Off Ate is the gold standard of Girl Group Challenge of the entire franchise because of how good it was; the lyricism, the athleticism, the choreography, the hairography, all the flips and dips.

Like I said: the GOLD standard.

Now in its third season, Drag Race Philippines continues to exemplify drag excellence that can be at par to the best of the world. If you want a fabulous proof, look no further than Eva Le Queen and Marina Summers.

Never heard of them? Look them up pronto. You can thank me later.
