The Philippines is a country with a diverse culture and customs. The province of Antique is the gateway to some of the country’s storied past; it lies in silence, waiting for wandering souls to expose its hidden gems.
Situated along the shores of Panay Island, Antique opens a mesmerizing voyage in time, transporting the curious to ancient rice terraces to Spanish colonial structures that line the province.
A Tribute Chiseled in Stone
Antique’s history stems from the enchanting layout of the Rice Terraces. This 600-hectare wonder was built by hand and preserved by the Iraynon Bukidnon, an indigenous group from Barangay General Fullon, and proved that humans can work in harmony with nature.
The Tibiao Rice Terraces lie in a valley surrounded by rolling hills and awe-inspiring mountain peaks. Going northwest will lead you to two waterfalls alongside a peak at the Sibalom River on the opposite side.
“Visiting this cultural heritage will be a challenge though: trekkers will start their five-hour trek from Barangay General Fullon. They will pass by five mountains to reach the terraces.”
A Walk Through Time
History lovers will be overwhelmed by Antique Spanish colonial architecture. Churches like the UNESCO World Heritage Site-accredited San Jose de Antique enthrall visitors with intricate details that narrate ancient tales. At the same time, the picturesque villages of Hamtic and Tibiao feature ancestral homes with distinguishing architectural styles recalling their glory days.
Antique’s pulsating cultural heritage resonates through the province’s fiestas. The Binirayan Festival, an annual month-long cultural celebration held every December, commemorates the arrival of 10 Bornean datus on the island of Aninipay (now known as Panay).
The festival includes water parades, and vibrant street dances and exhibits the talents of local artists and professional artisans in their vast handicrafts, intricate fabrics, and other unique items that use indigenous materials.
Nature Bounty Awaits
Aside from its rich cultural upbringing, Antique also boasts a wealth of natural wonders. These include the secluded Bugang Daku Falls which is surrounded by a dense rainforest. From there, visitors can also take a side trip and relax at Mararison Island—a haven for swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing.
A Glimpse into Local Life
While Antique is filled with hidden treasures and a “blast from the past” experience, the province is rooted in the genuine charm of its citizens. You don’t just get authentic hospitality, but tourists feel at home as they engage with the people, take part in their culture, and eat just like the locals do.
