Before Filipino native dogs were called “Aspin,” they were commonly referred to as “Askal,” a colloquial name for asong kalye, or street dogs. Fortunately, the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) and animal advocates pushed for a more dignified term.
“There is so much in a name,” as PAWS Executive Director Anna Cabrera emphasized. If Filipinos continue to call these native dogs “askals,” it stamps a notion that they belong only on the streets. The shift to using the name “aspin” has changed the way we see these beloved pets, encouraging owners to showcase them on social media while reflecting a growing sense of pride and affection for the breed.
Filipinos must recognize that while aspins are naturally resilient and have adapted to the country’s harsh climatic conditions, their needs should not be overlooked. Aspins may not be picky eaters and can live off our leftovers, but they will also enjoy commercial dog food, just like any other breed. And just like any other pet or domesticated animal, regular feeding is important; As pup royalty, our aspins deserve the best, especially when it comes to their meals.
While we’re on the subject of pampering, our “royal” aspins also need a good place to sleep. Again, they can just lie on the floor and doze away, but it doesn’t mean that we cannot offer them a comfortable alternative. And no, a cramped cage doesn’t count.
To say the least, aspins need shelter or a space in the house that can protect them from extreme heat or cold. Invest in a cozy dog bed, or recycle an old mattress and blankets and provide them with the comfort that they deserve and give them a safe spot.
It’s also rare to see aspins in grooming salons. Yes, they can be low maintenance, but this doesn’t mean that grooming is out of the question. Aspins should be bathed at least twice a week to get rid of ticks and fleas, and check their ears for pests and infections while you’re at it.
And of course, emotional care is equally important. Owners need to build a bond with bantay; communicate with them, or train them to follow simple commands. This can foster trust and strengthen their bonds. Remember, aspins are loyal and eager to please their masters.
It’s time to show our Aspins the affection and attention they truly deserve. Like any other breed, they thrive on tenderness, attention, and a bit of pampering on the side. Treat them as the pup royalty that they are; After all, they are just as special as any other breed.
