Sundry Items as Sartorial Staples “Kum-Haute Couture”

With an 8.5/10 IMDb score, Episode 6 of the much-lauded Drag Race Philippines Season 3 spotlighted one of the humblest working-class essentials: a floral mattress recognized in homes across the country.

In an inspired challenge called “Kum-Haute Couture,” the remaining queens hit the runway, transforming this everyday item into stunning sartorial creations.

Long before the runway challenge, Erwan Heussaff was spotted wearing the same iconic fabric during a family pictorial, sparking a flood of playful, rollicking comments online.

The polo, crafted by Filipino brand Nobody Clothing, is known as the Milagros Polo. According to the designers, it is named after “a lady who is very close to heart and home.”

A fashion icon in her own right, superstar Vice Ganda stunned everyone during the promotional shoot for Vice Comedy Club, arriving in a bold ensemble inspired by classic Filipino staples: kumot (blanket), tuwalya (towel), and termos (thermos). The nostalgia continued with another familiar fabric—flour sacks—which Kathryn Bernardo was seen wearing during a beach trip.

Preview opined that the Pilmico upcycled top Bernardo wore is available at Frankie General Store, with branches in Power Plant Mall, Rockwell, and The Podium, among others. And Again Clothing also shared on Instagram that “the sack was sourced from a bakery, washed, cut, and sewn by skilled seamstresses in Manila.”

Popular content creator Sassa Gurl also embraced unconventional fashion during the launch of Drag Den Season 2 on Amazon Prime, stepping out in an outfit made from calendar fabric—another staple in Filipino homes.

This trend of transforming everyday household items into fashion pieces not only celebrates Filipino creativity but also champions sustainability, giving overlooked materials a second life and reducing environmental impact.

Fashion evolves with time, carrying the belief that wearable art doesn’t have to come at the expense of taste.
