The Rise of Artificial Intelligence: The Past, Present and Future of AI and How It Has Impacted Our Lives

Over the years, the concept of Artificial Intelligence, or AI as it is commonly known today, went from being a figment of the creative mind to our ever-constant and reliable partner.

With movies like the innocent “Bicentennial Man” to the more complex AI depiction of “The Matrix,” “2001: A Space Odyssey,” “Terminator,” and everything else in between, movies have provided us with a glimpse of what AI is capable of. Fast forward to today, what was seen as an outrageous concept before is now giving us a much-needed boost to make our lives faster, easier, and more convenient.

Here are some interesting facts about artificial intelligence that you might want to know:

WHERE IT STARTED

American computer and cognitive scientist John McCarthy coined the term “Artificial Intelligence” following his research on AI in the 1950s leading to the Dartmouth Conference in the summer of 1956. Science and tech website SciHi said that it was also the first time the term was used in a publication when McCarthy authored a two-month, 10-person summer research conference.

“𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑡𝑢𝑑𝑦 𝑖𝑠 𝑡𝑜 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑐𝑒𝑒𝑑 𝑜𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑖𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑗𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑦 𝑎𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑐𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑛𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑜𝑟 𝑎𝑛𝑦 𝑓𝑒𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑙𝑙𝑖𝑔𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑐𝑎𝑛 𝑖𝑛 𝑝𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑐𝑖𝑝𝑙𝑒 𝑏𝑒 𝑠𝑜 𝑝𝑟𝑒𝑐𝑖𝑠𝑒𝑙𝑦 𝑑𝑒𝑠𝑐𝑟𝑖𝑏𝑒𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑎 𝑚𝑎𝑐ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑒 𝑐𝑎𝑛 𝑏𝑒 𝑚𝑎𝑑𝑒 𝑡𝑜 𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑢𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝑖𝑡.”

FROM THE BIG SCREEN TO GAMES

The perennial rise of AI has been embedded in almost every Sci-Fi movie, ranging from child-friendly animations to those who deliver in-depth information about the system.

Big screen hits like “The Terminator” franchise and how it portrayed Skynet as an artificial superintelligence system capable of world domination to “Mission: Impossible” with the entity’s sentient AI, the thought of computers dominating—and helping—their human counterparts has long been a subject of debate when it comes to it turning on mankind.

But then again, movies were made to stimulate the imagination.

Along this line, AI has sparked the curiosity of the general public and, most evidently, how it would work with humans. In 1997, IBM’s “Deep Blue” defeated chess world champion Gary Kasparov, a feat that will forever etch the start of AI as a machine that is capable of logical thinking.

AI also helps non-playable characters, or NPCs, enemies, and quests become “player-like.” What this means is that they act like they are being played by humans, making the game more challenging and interactive in the process.

YOUR DAILY DOSE OF AI

There is no denying the fact that AI will continue to evolve over time. The possibilities are endless for the system and it will only improve. In the process, it will also make life on the fast lane even faster, easier, and hassle-free.

Modern companies use AI as part of their customer service. Case in point, chatbots deliver messages for efficiently and answer questions straight to the point. Although there will be times that our queries will be transferred to a real agent, but all basic and even complex questions have already been answered by the system.

Even our smartphones, our daily companions that never leave our hands and pockets – have the blueprint to structure AI. Mobile assistants like Siri and Alexa or even Spotify and Netflix enhance our daily activities: tell them what you want and they’ll do the rest, perhaps even more.

The proverbial smart home revolution also contains AI on every corner. From light control and improved security cameras to automatically adjusting the temperature when we arrive, is just too good to be true. But thanks to AI, our house has become a home where everybody can relax and unwind.

Then there’s AI in finance, AI in transportation, AI in healthcare, and the list goes on. Needless to say, the possibilities are endless, provided that they are to help us become better people and the output that we make to help the world a better place.

Artificial Intelligence is here and it is here to stay. It may be overlooked by some, but its impact on a global scale can be felt on every corner.
