The Importance of Rest and Recovery in Marathon Training

Runners have a tendency to train even when they are tired. They might go out for a run even if they’re scheduled to rest. We can’t blame them, though; runners are resilient creatures who sometimes feel the need to move or do something to maintain their streak.

The importance of rest and recovery is often overlooked, especially as race week approaches. Beginner runners will most likely rack up their miles, double their efforts during interval training, and forget that taking a breather is part of their training.

One of the most obvious reasons rest is important during training is that it allows muscles, joints, and ligaments to repair themselves after a hard session or long run. Runners need to remind themselves that overtraining can have serious consequences. Injuries such as stress fractures, shin splints, and muscle strains are more likely to occur when adequate rest isn’t prioritized.

Fatigue will also set in if an athlete continues to train even when they are tired. It’s been proven that rest helps improve overall endurance. Allowing the body to recover lets it adapt to previous training, leading to better performance and stronger muscles in future sessions.

Active rest, on the other hand, can greatly benefit runners who still want to stay in motion during their rest days. These are low-impact activities that aid the body’s recovery. Swimming, walking, yoga, and hiking are some options runners can incorporate into their rest days.

Active rest can also help repair microscopic muscle tears, reduce delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), and promote blood circulation, flexibility, and relaxation.

Another benefit of rest and recovery is mental resilience. Runners might cram when race day approaches, but taking time to visualize their strategy, eat properly, and refuel lost nutrients will be vital for their success. This will also reduce burnout and relieve them of the pressure that comes with breaking their personal best or other goals.
