Senate Majority Leader Francis “Tol” Tolentino is calling for stronger mental health initiatives in both the education sector and the workforce, highlighting their vital role in promoting the overall well-being of Filipinos.
As a member of the Senate Committee on Basic Education, Tolentino supports the Basic Education Mental Health and Well-Being Promotion Act, a proposed measure that seeks to establish mental health programs in schools. The bill includes the creation of wellness centers and the hiring of mental health professionals to support students and educators in managing stress, anxiety, and other psychological challenges.
In the labor sector, Tolentino has filed Senate Bill No. 2475, also known as the “Right to Disconnect” bill. This measure aims to protect employees from work-related stress by allowing them to disengage from professional duties outside of working hours. “It is important to safeguard workers’ right to disconnect, as mental stress from intrusive bosses or employers can lead to loss of appetite, sleep deprivation, and even depression,” Tolentino emphasized.
Beyond legislation, Tolentino’s commitment to mental health is also evident in his community outreach efforts. His medical caravans, such as the recent one held in Laguna, offer holistic health services—which include mental health support to underserved communities. “We want to bring not just medical assistance, but also hope and the gift of health to our fellow Filipinos,” Tolentino said.
Tolentino remains steadfast in crafting policies that address the mental health needs of Filipinos, recognizing that emotional and psychological wellness are key to building a more resilient and productive nation. As he seeks another term in the Senate, he continues to champion inclusive, holistic, and forward-looking health programs.
