17 Filipino local government officials, including several chief executives, remain stranded in Israel after the country temporarily closed its airspace and airports following Iranβs retaliatory airstrikes, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed Tuesday, June 17.
The information was also verified by Israelβs Ambassador to the Philippines, Ilan Fluss.
The stranded officials are part of a Philippine delegation on an official study visit focused on exchanging best practices in dairy farming. Sponsored by the Israeli government, the delegation, including five other Filipino participants, was caught off guard by the sudden escalation of conflict in the region.
βAll of them are being taken care of by the Israeli government, and we are also looking for ways to send them back to the Philippines. This is our responsibility and our commitment,β Ambassador Fluss said in an interview, and assured the public that they are safe and in good condition.
βI can tell you that they are being fed, have lodging, and whatever they need, we are catering for. They are doing fine, of course, itβs not a pleasant situation,β he added.
Amid the growing instability in the region, several major airports across the Middle East are experiencing significant flight disruptions. Airline companies, including Emirates, Etihad, flydubai, and Qatar Airways, have announced widespread changes to their operations due to escalating safety concerns.
Flight cancellations, rerouted air traffic, and delays have been reported at key international hubs, notably Dubai International Airport, Abu Dhabi International Airport, and Hamad International Airport in Doha.
Passengers traveling through these airports were urged to monitor flight status updates and remain in contact with their respective airlines as the situation develops.
Despite ongoing tensions and flight suspensions, Israeli authorities are working closely with the Philippine government to ensure the groupβs safe and swift repatriation. While no official timeline has been provided, coordination efforts are already underway.
The DFA continues to monitor the regional security situation and has advised all Filipinos in Israel to remain vigilant, stay informed, and follow the guidance of local authorities.
