Health, Wellness and Juan Dela Cruz: The Impact of Running and Multisports to Filipinos

More Filipinos are ditching their sedentary lifestyle in exchange for a more active and fit routine. This change has been transforming our mindset in recent years, thanks mainly to the rising interest in sports such as running and, for others, multisports like triathlon.

This movement is not just a trend, but a wake-up call for Filipinos as they discover the many benefits of staying fit and healthy. Peer influence, social media or the simple yet impactful decision to drop their old ways help in this movement: a positive switch to improve their lives with sports at the helm.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Filipinos have always been “chill” despite the many problems that come their way. But modern times took on a sharp turn: lifestyle-related illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes and obesity have made such an impact that it prompted an overnight urge to feel better inside and out.

Pair this with the rise of fitness influencers, massive health campaigns and regular fitness activities, a revolution was created to raise awareness. Social media became the centerpiece of this campaign with stories of success, transformation, healthy diet advocacies, even free training programs – all of these and many more are available for free.

THE SIMPLICITY OF RUNNING

Running has this certain impression that attracts Filipinos to take up the sport. Suffice to say, running is one of the simplest forms of exercise: a good pair of running shoes, some quick-drying shirt and comfortable shorts are all you need to start your running journey.

Running is also accessible and requires minimal preparation. In addition, running events and groups are sprouting everywhere to promote a venue for healthy competition and an inclusive community for runners to share their experiences and celebrate their milestones.

The increase in the sport’s popularity can also be linked to the growing advocacy on mental health. Running can be a form of therapy and a tool to clear the mind, relieve stress and be closer to nature. This, plus the benefits of running to improve strength, endurance and weight management is an enticing invitation for Filipinos to lace up their running shoes.

THE CHARM OF MULTISPORTS

Aside from running, Filipinos are also lured by the allure of multisports. From triathlon, duathlon, aquathlon, to even trying out obstacle course racing, these sports go beyond the traditional. It challenges fitness buffs to hone their skills in three (or even more) disciplines, build more endurance, strength and flexibility.

The growing fad of multisports continues as an athlete pushes their boundaries for self-improvement, exploring new physical trials and the feeling of accomplishing something new. It’s not every day that an average Juan dela Cruz finishes three sports, find themselves in international competition waving the Philippine flag or being called an Ironman, triathlon’s grand pinnacle.

A HEALTHY FUTURE

Running and multisports are just parts of a healthier future that’s in store for Filipinos who are looking for a new lease in life. There’s no question that other sports and activities will be discovered to pave new avenues that will improve quality of life, combat diseases and illnesses, motivate the community to stay fit and healthy not only for themselves, but for their loved ones.
