“I got you sis, you got me. The best of friends we’ll always always be.”
This was a line from the theme song of Sis, the defunct Kapuso morning talk show of real life sisters Janice and Gelli de Belen but the line proved each word for the famous siblings because they’re not only sisters, they’re also each other’s best friend who got each other, all the way.
In their guesting with broadcast journalist vlogger, Karen Davila, the sisters shared their dynamics as siblings and friends as well as the most challenging ordeals they triumphed together.
One of the most famous personalities with the most controversial love life in showbiz has to be the Flor de Luna star.
The young Janice had the most handsome men in showbiz as her ex-boyfriends, among them Gabby Concepcion, Aga Muhlach and John Estrada.
Everything that she went through was witnessed by her younger sister.
“Actually isa lang naman talaga yung nakitaan ko ng red flag kasi wala pa ko sa wisyo nung mga ibang boyfriends niya eh, I was very young. I was like, oh my God, si Gabby Concepcion nasa bahay namin. Ay si Aga Muhlach, tatay ng pamangkin ko, ganun pako eh,” Gelli said.
“Nung naging si John meron na ‘kong wisyo and syempre it’s a small industry” she said.
It is no secret that Janice and John’s family’s relations turned sour when the two separated and got their marriage annulled. The reason was infidelity on John’s part as admitted by Janice through the years.
Looking back, Gelli said she heard things concerning her former brother-in-law’s whereabouts and would tell her older sister about it.
“‘Yung common friends, and people in the industry, thankfully parang nakikita mo talaga na they’re concerned and they’re real and they’re true. Kasi they call me and tell me look, this is what I saw,” Gelli said.
She remembers very particularly what was going on during the time when the mess was getting out of control
“I remember, towards the end na talaga ito na ‘yun, kasi nakailang beses akong sabi sa kanya na hindi naman talagang umubra, so hinayaan ko na lang, ayaw mo eh, wala akong magagawa,” she said.
“One of the last times, I told her, very definitive. Sabi niya I want proof. Proof ba kamo? Naghanap talaga ko ng proof,” she said.
Gelli reasoned that if something similar had happened to her she would likewise prefer to have a sister that would do the same thing for her.
Davila asked what proof she sought for.
“Like a photo?” Davila asked.
“More pa,” Gelli answered.
Gelli later on admitted that she got to a point of putting John under surveillance to make her sister believe.
“O sige na nga, aaminin ko na nga, umabot ako sa puntong nagpa-private investigator ako. Itodo na natin to,” she said.
Janice said that being confronted with the truth was not an easy pill to swallow.
“It took a while to sink in. Kasi hindi ko alam kung ano gagawin ko eh, it took a while. Kung totoo anong gagawin ko. Where do I go from here, ‘yun ‘yung mahirap. But when things came together, when I made final decisions siya ang una kong sinabihan. Siya pa yung naiyak,” Janice said.
Even though Gelli wanted her sister to believe, she still did not wish for their family to break.
“Syempre because it was already final. Yung separation of a family is no joke, a big deal. It’s not just between the two of them eh,” Gelli said.
Janice said she understood her sister’s intention for doing what she did.
“Letting me know all these things or telling me had nothing to do with her wanting us to separate. I think she just wanted me to see things and base my behavior or how I do things or my choices on what I already know,” she said.
“Looking back at it, I appreciate it. Siyempre noon hindi. Tipikal akong naiinlove na tanga diba, bulag pipi bingi…” Janice said.
The stronger one between them, Gelli said she was the type who would nip things in the bud the moment she sees something was amiss.
“I saw what she went through eh. Even with her first second boyfriends nakita ko eh, ay hindi uubra sakin ‘yan. Hindi ko kailangan pagdaanan ‘yan ayoko but it doesn’t mean na all love stories of my life went well either right,” Gelli said.
“Pero nga for me, self-preservation is first,” Gelli said.
Together, John and Janice have four children, one is now an actress Inah Estrada. In interviews, Janice had always been open that the girl who went in between their marriage was former actress Vanessa del Bianco.
Now both in their fifties, Gelli and Janice are closer to each other more than ever. Despite having their individual families, they will always be each other’s best friends.
