How ‘Hold My Hand’ (nothing beats a Jet2 holiday) Became TikTok’s Unlikely Disaster Soundtrack

The popular Instagram handle @kabulastugan, known for its hilarious videos and memes, recently reposted a clip originally recorded by @dhanaianey. It features a person falling—not once, but twice—on what appears to be a suspiciously bendable seat.

The gag, beyond just being funny to the casual viewer, lies in the deadpan expression of the person despite the double fall. The video has since racked up 1.2 million views on the photo-and-video-sharing app.

Adding to the comic effect is the background music, which is now making the rounds across the social media circuit.

The song is “Hold My Hand” by Jess Glynne, with an interjection by British actress Zoë Lister cheerfully announcing, “Nothing beats a Jet2 holiday.”

Originally, this came from a Jet2holidays campaign by the UK’s largest tour operator, promoting a delicious deal: £50 off per person on holiday packages. A real steal, especially for families planning a vacation.

But how did it go from a cheerful, sun-soaked commercial to TikTok virality featuring people caught in small-scale, unexpected disasters?

The transformation is rooted in irony, with a bit of TikTok’s penchant for guffawing fun. If you’re the type who doom-scrolls the app well into the night, you’ll know it’s only a matter of time before a seemingly harmless song gets paired with a saccharine voiceover—and users inevitably start matching it with mishaps and faux pas.

According to Jenna Jacobson, a social media specialist from the Toronto Metropolitan University, as quoted in The New York Times, “part of the appeal of the trend is its paradoxical nature—pairing a fun, lively audio with chaotic events.”

How long this trend will last, only time will tell. In the meantime, let’s enjoy all the clips—praying that you won’t be in one of them.

Move over, Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan, Jess Glynee and Zoë Lister are taking it.
