Running a half marathon is an exciting opportunity and an achievement all rolled into one. Aside from the fact that it requires more intense training, taking part in a 21-kilometer race means that a runner is halfway on their journey to becoming a marathoner.
The transition from starting at the bottom – 5KM fun runs and sub1 10KM challenges – to slowly inching their way to a 42KM highlight indicates that a runner is taking the sport with a serious note. But before they see themselves on the starting line of their first marathon, they must first endure – and enjoy – the Half Mary.
Aside from the rigorous training, preparing for a half marathon race will also include proper nutrition, cross-training and supplements. Having the right gear is also crucial and can make all the difference in your performance come race day.
Running Shoes
While running is simple and requires minimal equipment, investing in a good pair of running shoes can and will be a game-changer. There are a ton of marathon-specific shoes in the market and choosing which one is best for you will boil down to personal preference.
Among others, comfort will be front and center in selecting your half-marathon shoes. Again, it all comes down to personal choice. Some runners will go for “max cushioned” shoes for that soft and bouncy feel, while others, especially those who are gunning for a podium finish or a personal best, will go for carbon-plated variants for maximum push-off and energy return.
It is also important to note the aspects of your weight, alongside stability and durability. Remember, you will be running for close to two hours, perhaps even more; aside from your lungs, your feet will take up the most beating.
Clothing
Two words: avoid cotton. Go for quick-drying or technical fabric like polyester or those DriFit ones in your closet. Upon registration, most organizers will include a singlet as part of the race kit.
Opting to wear shorts or tights will again depend on your preference. Choose what’s comfortable, with breathability as a priority.
Gadgets
While not absolutely necessary, a good Smartwatch or fitness tracker will make the runner track their pace, distance and heart rate.
These devices may be quite expensive for the beginner runner, although some of its features may be included on several Smartphone apps like Strava. There are also affordable Smartwatches available on the market that won’t hurt your wallet but will enable you to monitor your progress.
Earphones are optional to keep you entertained for the duration of the race.
Accessories
Hydration belts are best for carrying your water bottle and energy gels if you’re not into stuffing them in your pockets. A good pair of sunglasses and your trusty cap will provide enough protection just in case your half-marathon will last longer than you’ve expected.
Investing in a good pair of running socks will also be a good idea to prevent blisters and extra cushioning.
On a side note, go for comfort over fashion. The sport of running can and will be “Instagrammable” considering the bevy of shoes and accessories that could tickle your fancy.
Remember, your half-marathon race is the halfway mark. You’re almost there. Enjoy, have fun and be proud of yourself; not everybody can finish a 21KM footrace, let alone have the guts to register.
