Owning a pet dog is a rewarding experience that brings companionship, joy, and a sense of responsibility into everyday life. Dogs offer unconditional love and loyalty, often becoming trusted friends who provide comfort during stressful times. Caring for a dog also encourages a healthy routine through daily walks, playtime, and regular feeding, which can improve both physical and mental well-being. In return for proper care and attention, a dog gives affection, protection, and a lasting bond that enriches the home.
According to Philstar Life, a study from Japan suggests that growing up with a pet dog may offer notable mental health benefits for teenagers. Led by Dr. Kikusui Takefumi of Azabu University and published in the iScience journal, the research found that adolescents who owned dogs reported better overall well-being compared with their peers without pets. The findings also showed that teen dog owners experienced fewer social difficulties and scored higher in areas related to companionship and perceived social support as they matured.

The researchers further observed that young people with dogs displayed lower levels of social withdrawal, problematic thinking, delinquency, and aggressive behavior than non-dog owners. According to the study, these differences are particularly meaningful because adolescence is a crucial period for brain development, especially in the prefrontal cortex, which plays a key role in social behavior and emotional regulation.
While previous studies have pointed to the positive influence of dogs on their owners’ well-being, sometimes with mixed results, the authors said their findings add to growing evidence that pets can support adolescents’ social and emotional development. The study involved 343 teenagers in Tokyo, including 96 dog owners, providing insight into how everyday interactions with animals may shape mental health during a formative stage of life.
