The Pros and Cons of Virtual Classrooms

The idea of remote learning, or attending classes through a virtual classroom, may carry a certain appeal to the younger generation, but parents, policymakers and educators have things to say about this new approach to education.

The virtual classroom is a revolutionary step in the field of education. It has been proven that schools, learning institutions and other key personalities are pushing for a future-proof strategy that allows students from all over the world to be connected and to learn.

While online classes come with a variety of benefits, including flexibility, ease of access to information and resources and personalized learning experiences, it also raises certain concerns. Student engagement and emotional well-being are the two main challenges that need to be addressed for virtual classrooms to be holistically accepted as the ideal replacement for traditional learning.

The pros

Powered by the information superhighway, virtual classrooms break down geographical barriers and allow students to come together regardless of their country of origin. Students from remote areas can also access quality education from the comfort of their own homes, provided that they have good internet connection.

Virtual classrooms also offer flexibility. At best, online classes are suited for students who balance their studies with other responsibilities, such as part-time jobs, household chores, or taking care of their family.

Digital resources are a dime a dozen. Information from the internet—videos, images, text, and documents—make complex tasks easier. With just a simple click or tap, answers to even the most intricate questions are served on a silver cyber platter in seconds.

Online forums and discussion boards offer a sense of community among students and likewise encourage the sharing of ideas. Some collaborate and share their knowledge and expertise for the group to utilize.

The cons

The lack of face-to-face interaction among students poses several risks to their well-being, including a sense of isolation and detachment.

In comparison, traditional classes promote interaction among peers, while teachers or mentors give immediate feedback to students’ output. These alone stimulate an interactive and inclusive learning environment.

Motivation and engagement

Engagement refers to the different opportunities for students to be involved, may it be in the form of interactive activities, group discussions, physical classroom participation and discussions. It’s an important factor in the learning process, since it increases students’ attention, focus and critical thinking. In contrast, a virtual setup diminishes motivation and accountability among students due to their physical absence.

Since virtual classrooms can be held anywhere, distractions coming from the household, such as sudden errands and the constant come-and-go of family members, also interrupt the learning process. Teachers have also integrated one-on-one discussions with their students, regularly giving them feedback and maintaining a healthy connection that breaks the barriers of virtual classrooms.
