How a Cat’s Purr Can Help You Relax After a Stressful Day

The soothing sound of a cat’s purr is more than just a sign of contentment. Scientific research suggests has actual therapeutic benefits that can lower blood pressure, reduce stress, and promote physical healing.

As cat ownership rises in the Philippines, more people are discovering the benefits and comfort of having a feline companion.

Behind the Purr

A cat’s purr is a low-frequency vibration, typically ranging between 25 and 150 Hz. Studies indicate that sounds within this range are linked to healing and relaxation in humans. In addition, the vibrations produced at these frequencies can lessen discomfort, improve bone development, and encourage tissue regeneration.

Some researchers also speculate that this may explain why cats, known for their fast healing, purr when they are sick or injured.

Furry Stress Relievers

Stress will always be a perennial problem for people who are living in a fast-paced environment. Owning a cat, on the other hand, offers a natural way to unwind and escape the hustle and bustle of modern living, as local animal welfare advocates report a growing number of Filipinos turning to their pets for emotional support.

Petting a cat releases endorphins, the chemicals in the brain that promote happiness and relaxation. For cat owners, the rhythmic, gentle sound of purring can have a calming effect, helping them to relax, lower anxiety levels, and improve mood.

Research in 2023 also pointed out that pet ownership is associated with lower cortisol levels, the hormone responsible for stress. As mental health awareness grows in the Philippines, people increasingly view pets as “emotional support friends.” As such, organizations like the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) are actively promoting responsible pet ownership and emphasizing the psychological benefit pets provide to their owners.

Cats and Mythos

The belief in the healing properties of a cat’s purr now goes beyond myth. With growing scientific evidence supporting its calming effect, cats are now being recognized as ideal companions that can slowly relieve stress. This can be ideal for Filipinos who are seeking mental health support.

We live in a society that values emotional well-being. The gentle purr of a cat reminds us that, at the end of the day, their comfort and healing are all we need to melt our stress away.
