Inside the PhiSci Exam: A Glimpse into the Nation’s Brightest Minds

The PSHS National Competitive Examination (NCE) serves as the gateway to this esteemed school, offering an incredible opportunity for students to pursue a specialized education in science, mathematics, and research.

When we think of the best and the brightest in the public education system, Science High Schools are often the first to come to mind.

Among them, the Philippine Science High School (PSHS), with its main campus in Quezon City, stands out as a prestigious institution dedicated to cultivating the nation’s future leaders in science and technology. The PSHS National Competitive Examination (NCE) serves as the gateway to this esteemed school, offering an incredible opportunity for students to pursue a specialized education in science, mathematics, and research.

There are currently 16 PSHS campuses across the Philippines, strategically located to provide access to students from different regions. These schools offer an advanced curriculum focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). In addition to PSHS, many local governments also operate their own Science High Schools.

To be eligible for the NCE, applicants must meet specific requirements. Applicants must be a Filipino citizen currently enrolled in Grade 6, with a minimum grade of 85% in Science and Mathematics, as reflected in their report card. If the grades in these subjects fall below 85%, students can provide proof that they are in the top 10% of their class.

Other criteria include a satisfactory character rating on their report card, being no older than 15 years old by June 30, 2025, and not having previously applied to PSHS. Physical fitness is also considered, as the school demands resilience for its rigorous academic program.

The benefits of passing the PSHS NCE are substantial. Successful applicants are granted a scholarship that covers full tuition, a free loan of textbooks, and a monthly stipend. Additionally, students from low-income backgrounds receive allowances for uniforms, transportation, and, if applicable, dormitory accommodation.

These financial benefits ensure that talented students, regardless of their economic situation, can thrive in a nurturing and challenging academic environment.

The application process involves submitting key documents, such as recent ID pictures, a certified true copy of the report card, and proof of academic eligibility. Private school applicants are required to pay a PHP 300 processing fee, while public school students and those on full scholarships are exempt.
