Is Reckless Driving a Norm in Philippine Roads?

Beyond the rising cases of road rage, incidents of reckless driving resulting in road accidents continue to claim lives all over the country.

The most recent tragedy involved a 61-year-old woman who died after being struck by two SUVs and a sedan in Quezon City, police reported.

Authorities later identified the victim as Rosemarie Orcine, a resident of Bulacan.

According to the Inquirer, the incident took place at the intersection of Illinois Street and Aurora Boulevard in Barangay Silangan on Saturday, May 17. CCTV footage released by the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) showed Orcine was first struck by a black SUV. Moments later, a white SUV and a sedan also ran her over.

“The QCPD is continuing its investigation and follow-up operations to identify the drivers of the black and white SUVs who immediately fled the scene after the incident,” authorities said in a statement.

The QCPD Public Information Office informed the media via Viber that the driver of the sedan had been taken into custody.

The drivers involved may be charged with reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, the police noted.

The recent incident highlighted the growing concern of drivers who act recklessly, ignoring traffic rules and the safety of others.

According to the Land Transportation Office (LTO), reckless driving is defined as the act of operating a motor vehicle dangerously, which endangers the safety of motorists and pedestrians.

Common types of reckless driving include over speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or “drunk driving,” and distracted driving.

Consequences may result in penalties including fines, license suspension, and even jail time if it causes serious injury or death.

Meanwhile, victims and their families have several legal options to seek justice. They can press criminal charges, file a civil case for damages based on quasi-delict, pursue administrative remedies, or potentially resolve the issue through an amicable settlement.
